Great Places Housing Group (formerly Manchester Methodist Housing Association) acquired this Grade II listed church, which became redundant.
Bradshaw Gass and Hope were commissioned to design and oversee a contract to convert the building into 13 apartments for rent within the public sector housing market. The philosophy behind the design was to utilise the aisles, transepts and ends for accommodation over 2 storeys, introducing a balcony access at column capital level. The Nave space was largely preserved as a meeting place and entrance hall for the whole development.
Considerable refurbishment of the existing fabric was found to be necessary including re-roofing, stonework repairs, stained glass window refurbishment and floor replacements. The new apartments are configured in a simple modern idiom to allow the original details to stand out as reminders of the building’s former life and architectural character.
