LABC Building Excellence Awards

The recently completed Renaissance Residential Development has been nominated by Bolton Local Authority Building Control for an award in the LABC Building Excellence Awards.

The project, completed in July 2008, provides 53 individually designed apartments within a mixed refurbishment and new build project. The development, part of the Little Bolton Conservation Area, breathed new life into the former Temple Night Club site on St Georges Street Bolton. The existing low quality buildings on the site were demolished leaving what was formely the Lion Oil Works, an 18th Century stone mill building that provided opportunity to add a distinctive character to the development.

The scheme has been developed around a courtyard that creates a sense of community and intimacy within a busy urban location. It uses the character of the existing mill, with its natural stone elevations, slate roof and architectural articulation to provide a human scale architectural palette.

Bradshaw Gass and Hope LLP working closely with the Local Authority conservation officer, planning department and building control were able to develop a solution to the problem of re-use and refurbishment that met modern day property aspirations and sensitive town centre development.
